Need to Get Busy

A few folks posted the group email list today that they had graduated their current level, and I know I’ve been staying at level 2 a while now. Glory is doing real well on some behaviors, but I just got started on Go To Mat and haven’t even started on Leash Manners. So what I need to do is test out of what she can do very well so I can focus on those behaviors she doesn’t have down yet.

The scoreboard and training session numbers really help move things along!

Glory also is continuing with some agility on the flat training along with learning "over" (jump).

I also tried a shaping session with the weave poles, it didn’t go great. She is used to going around PVC poles from her distance training, so coming around on the side toward me is a new concept for her. I should stick with shaping a few more times just to see how I do. I could learn a lot since it’s pretty complex to weave.

Glory is doing very well on a few behaviors and I want to test out of them and concentrate on the Level 2 Behaviors that need work.

Looking over the scoreboard, I can clearly see I need to at least start Go To Mat and LLW. So today we started Go To Mat. Very brief session.

Recent Training Summary

Since my last entry 5 days ago, we have been doing a little bit of training each day, still continuing on the level’s behaviors. No real problems.

I do seem to spend too much time on our alternate behaviors, like "Tag and Touch" and "Spin and Twist." But Touch is a level behavior, and my spin and twist is my trick, so I guess I’m not straying too far.

But we also did two more jump training sessions outside. The most exciting part is she really enjoys using her tug toy for her reward rather than food. I also started using the clicker and the toy. I was afraid that as soon as I "clicked" she would stop and wonder where the food was. But she didn’t. I click, toss the toy and she wants the toy. This makes our jumping and "agility on the flat" training lots of fun and good exercise for both of us.

Continuing....

Today I wanted to work the target stick with both paw and nose touches. Paw touch in Tag, nose is touch. I worked the paw touch and was able to start putting it on cue. She was able to give me the correct response to each cue. It was amazing. I know where I place the target stick helps her be correct, but today I even held it in front of her nose and asked for a "tag" and she got it right.

We worked distance with the "away" cue only today. She really doesn’t understand this, but will get it right if my body language helps her.

For handling, we did Teeth, ears and feet. She accepts all of this from me easily.

One thing new happened today, when we did a sit stay, when I turned around at 20’ and came back to her, on the way back, she went into a "down". So will need to work duration closer to stop that before it becomes a habit.

Today Glory was also introduced to an agility jump. We worked with food and a toy. She did well and had no trouble. Jump height was 12"

Seeing where we are

This Levels Tracker motivated me to see where Glory is on her Level 2 behaviors, so today I just put her through some cued reps of everything we have been working on. Overall, I was pleased to see how she’s doing.

However, I made a big mistake for her first behavior, Crate. We haven’t trained this for well over a month, but she was doing really well. So I said: "Glory – Crate" and she barked at me. Okay, it had been awhile, so I said "Glory – Crate" and moved closer to the crate and pointed to it. She barked, but went inside.

We repeated this a couple more times complete with her barking at me and then I remembered her cue was "KENNEL" not "CRATE". So we repeated the exercise with the CORRECT cue and she got it right without barking everytime….It’s amazing how they can learn regardless of how much we mess up.

For Distance, we are working Go Bye and Away. She was 3/3 with Go Bye and 3/4 with Away. So away needs a bit more work.

And for our stays, she is handling the distance just fine, but if she makes an error, it’s when I walk away, she will get up and come with me. I think just slowing up a bit might fix that.

Also, when we do "watch" she throws sits and downs into the mix, but will still maintain eye contact. I am going to start over with less time so she realizes the watch is the behavior.

Also, by looking at the Scoreboard, I realize I haven’t even started on "go to mat" and will introduce that next time.
