Homework - Level Two
The four legs of operant conditioning are:
1) Positive reinforcement (R+) – This means adding something the animal will work for to strengthen, or increase the frequency of, a behaviour.
2) Positive punishment (P+) – This means adding something the animal will work to avoid in order to suppress, or reduce the frequency of, a behaviour.
3) Negative reinforcement (R-) – This means removing something the animal will work to avoid in order to strengthen, or increase the frequency of, a behaviour.
4) Negative punishment (P-) – This means taking something away that the animal will work for to suppress, or reduce the frequency of, a behaviour.
It is often suggested that there is a fifth aspect to operant conditioning – extinction. When extinction is in operation a behaviour is weakened, or even eliminated, through the absence of any reinforcement.
Definition of reinforcement: a behavior has been maintained or increased in frequency, duration or intensity.
Definition of punishment: a behaviour has been eliminated or reduced in frequency, intensity or duration.

Homework - Level One
In working the levels, these are some of the things I hope to accomplish:
1) Achieving some structure to my training efforts.
2) Making sure I identify and remedy my training gaps.
3) To discover how to train some skills that I have never attempted before.
4) To remember to deal with each of my dogs as an individual and work at their speed, not another dog’s or my own.
5) I especially want each of my dogs to thoroughly enjoy their work and my company throughout the process of learning.
